From Scraps to Stories - The Art of the Layer: How I Build My Hand-Cut Collages
Welcome to my studio, nestled in the foothills of Eryri. If you were to walk in today, you’d likely see my workbench buried under a mountain of paper scraps, vintage labels, and hand-painted textures. To some, it looks like a mess; to me, it’s a puzzle waiting to be solved.
My process always starts with a feeling or a single "hero" piece. For my new Stars Roebuck card, it began with a vintage 19th-century advert. I loved the typography and the history it carried. I explored different ways to layer a fuchsia rose cutout around that label, pairing it with various papers until the balance felt just right.
There is something so meditative about the physical act of cutting and layering while the mountain mist rolls past the window. It’s a slow, tactile process in a fast world. When you hold one of my cards, you aren’t just holding stationery; you’re holding a miniature piece of art that has been carefully nurtured right here in North Wales.
Check out the new collection (coming soon) to see the results of my recent studio sessions.
